Turkish Army accepts its first-ever homegrown MANPADS
SUNGUR, Türkiye's first Portable Air Defence Missile System (MANPADS), developed locally by ROKETSAN, entered to the Turkish Armed Forces inventory.
Head of the Turkish Defense Industry Agency (SSB) Prof. Dr. Ismail Demir stated that the SUNGUR missile entered the service of Turkish forces with its shoulder-launched version in the TEK-ER (Single Soldier) configuration, following SUNGUR’s integration to the land platforms.
With this development, the first batch of the SUNGUR Missile Defence System, which is effective against UAVs, jets and helicopters, has been delivered to the TAF.
SUNGUR's advantages for Türkiye
The SUNGUR System stands out with its Imager Infrared Seeker Head (IIR), which is resistant to deception countermeasures, offering a longer range than its counterparts and the ability to lock enemy elements from a greater distance than the eye's sight.
“I congratulate everyone who contributed to the design, development and production of this system, which we will no longer be dependent on abroad. We always say. If something is man-made, we can do it best. Greetings to our defense industry family, who work with the love of this country and this nation!”, Demir said.
ROKETSAN's great success
ROKETSAN's first project was the joint production of the FIM-92 Stinger MANPADS with the USA.
With this development, ROKETSAN has produced its own MANPADS. The development also marks a first for Türkiye. SUNGUR is Türkiye’s first-ever MANPADS.
Moreover, the SUNGUR missile developed by ROKETSAN has superior features than its counterpart, Stinger.
While the range of Stinger MANPADS is 4,8 kilometers, SUNGUR has a maximum range of 8 kilometers.
At the same time, while the Stinger missile has an IR seeker head, the probability of hitting targets is much higher thanks to the IIR seeker head in SUNGUR.
